Passing

When overtaking a vehicle on a two-lane highway, be especially wary of cars entering from your left. Put yourself into the car driver’s position to understand why. There is a good chance the driver is planning to make a right turn onto the highway you’re traveling on. Stop for a minute and think about where his attention will be in that case. Correct. He’s looking to make sure there is no traffic coming from his left. He’s not concerned about his right, the direction you’re approaching from, because he will not be entering that lane of traffic. As a result, he is very likely to pull out into the highway before he realizes you’re there. So, in addition to checking for oncoming traffic before you commit to pass, make sure there’s no one looking to pull out from the left. If there is, delay the passing maneuver. Should someone pull into that position after you’ve started your pass, slow if necessary to get back into your lane as quickly as possible. And by the same token, when you’re the one making a right turn from a stop, check to your right, as well as to your left, before pulling out.
