A special thanks to Trancer for this safety tip.
Had a situation occur which is posted on the Stone Mountain forum, where a lady rider was followed by two gentlemen in a car. While I suppose this could happen to anyone, I feel that the lady rider in this case may have been seen as an easy mark. As it turns out, the gentlemen had a helmet in the car and may have been after her bike, although they may have had other intentions. They followed her repeatedly, even after she made several attempts to ditch them, she even stopped at a police station but they still waited for her. She finally waved down two motorcops to get assistance, although once they stopped the car, there wasn't much they could do as no law had been broken (or at least the officers did not witness any laws being broken). These gentlemen said that they bought the helmet as a garage sale but couldn't remember where the sale was......... We had a discussion about this last weekend and I think a list of what to do in case you are followed is in order. Please add to the list and bring this up at your next meeting. First off, don't panic. If you spend all your time looking in the rear view mirror, you'll run into something. Go around the block or make a series of turns to see if you are truly being followed. DON'T GO HOME, even if you know there is someone else there to help. If you go home, they'll know where you live and come back another time when you're alone or not home to get the bike. Go to some place that's brightly lit and very public. Banks, areas around ATM machines, malls and government buildings typically have a bunch of cameras and crooks hate having their photos taken. Learn where the police precincts are in your area and what hours they are staffed. You may be able to out-run them but getting into a high speed chase on a dark road can be very dangerous. If you're riding in the evening or late at night, don't let your gas tank get too low. Running out of gas on a dark road is asking for trouble. If you are being followed and you hit a red light, take the right-on-red, even if you aren't going that direction. If you stop, they may try and approach you. Always carry a cell phone!
